Help With Hebrew
Guides, Tips, and Articles From Experienced Researchers
Last updated: October 5, 2000

Hebrew is usually a frustration for the beginning codes researcher. Today's software allows anybody to be able to search for codes, however, no matter how many dictionaries the program has, at one point or another there will always be a need for transliteration. Not every non-Hebrew word has a Hebrew translation. These words must be transliterated. You'll learn much more about this in some of the articles you'll read at this page.

A Basic Overview

J.W. Embry has written a brief guide that will give a basic overview of the Hebrew language. This will introduce you to the letters and explain translation and transliteration. It goes along with much of what is below on this page, so we recommend that to start with.

Learning the Names of the Hebrew Letters

The best advice you'll ever receive, it to memorize the names of all the Hebrew letters. It can be done very quickly using simple flashcards. J.W. Embry has prepared some printable flashcards for people to use. They'll print differently depending on your web browser and resolution, but on any system, they will work (although they may not be pretty). They are provided in GIF and JPG formats. The GIFs will load quicker, but on many systems will print much smaller than they appear. If this happens, use the JPG pictures. If all else fails, use the guides below to make your own flashcards.

Roy A. Reinhold has produced a free guide to Hebrew letters, that shows all the letters, their names, their keyboard positions, their number value, and how to do both calendar dates and numbers in Hebrew. You'll need the free Adobe Acrobat reader to view the guide.
